Many companies purchase screw chillers assuming that these units simply offer the best price-per-cooling-capacity ratio. However, for chillers delivering the same cooling capacity, there are significant differences in performance between air-cooled, water-cooled, and ultra-low-temperature variants. Relying solely on price when selecting a unit can easily lead to issues such as insufficient cooling capacity, substantially increased energy consumption, or frequent unit alarms, resulting in investment costs that fail to meet production requirements. Screw chillers are not universally suitable for all operating conditions; therefore, the key to proper unit selection lies in ensuring that the equipment hardware, cooling method, and site-specific conditions are well-matched.

First, distinguish between air-cooled and water-cooled units. Air-cooled chillers are equipped with built-in cooling fans, eliminating the need for a cooling tower; they can be put into operation simply by connecting them to an electrical and water supply, offering flexible installation options (including outdoor placement), making them suitable for scenarios with limited equipment room space—such as in coating process chillers applications. However, when the ambient temperature exceeds 35°C, their cooling capacity decreases, and their energy consumption is relatively higher.

Water-cooled screw chillers rely on cooling towers for heat dissipation; their compact design ensures stable energy efficiency even in high-temperature environments, making them ideal for continuous 24/7 production operations. However, these units require a cooling tower and a circulating water pump, as well as the necessary infrastructure for a mechanical room – and are commonly used for large-scale process cooling applications, such as in chemical plant chillers. The water-cooled system and the cooling tower are like inseparable partners – both are essential.

Secondly, it is important to distinguish between standard ambient-temperature screw chillers and ultra-low-temperature screw chillers. Standard screw chiller units deliver water at temperatures ranging from 5–25°C and utilize conventional water circulation systems; in contrast, ultra-low-temperature screw chillers can produce water at temperatures below 0°C, requiring the use of ethylene glycol antifreeze. Some manufacturers attempt to achieve low-temperature water output by lowering the setpoint temperature of standard ambient-temperature units – however, this can easily lead to frost formation on the compressor, triggering protective shutdowns or, in severe cases, damaging the main unit. Therefore, for low-temperature applications, it is recommended to directly select ultra-low-temperature screw chiller units.

Screw compressors feature energy regulation to adapt to fluctuating production loads. They automatically reduce output when production capacity changes, avoiding frequent start-stop cycles. Do not oversize cooling capacity unnecessarily: long-term low-load operation causes poor oil return and higher failure risk. Calculate capacity based on actual maximum heat load only.

Industry-specific matching: Choose air-cooled screw chillers for space-constrained coating industries with high temperature control requirements; select water-cooled or ultra-low-temperature models for chemical applications with corrosion resistance and low-temperature needs; use large water-cooled chillers for 24/7 centralized cooling in manufacturing facilities for better long-term cost-effectiveness.

Final selection checklist: 1. Actual process water outlet temperature; 2. Site suitability for cooling tower installation; 3. Real maximum heat load; 4. Circulating medium type (pure water or ethylene glycol).

For screw chiller procurement, quotations are for reference only. Selecting the right model based on actual operating conditions ensures stable operation and energy efficiency; prioritizing low procurement costs alone will lead to higher hidden losses from equipment failures and increased electricity expenses.
